After spending a heavenly weekend at Terranea (terra-NAY-a) Resort, it’s time to get back to reality. Although I do live in sunny Southern California, I don’t typically wake up to room service on a peninsula that feels worlds away from everything else. So for me, and I would assume for most people, it’s an absolute treat to visit an ocean front resort that offers so many luxurious amenities.

Just south of Los Angeles, Terranea Resort is perfectly perched on the edge of the Pacific Ocean in Palos Verdes. The old-world Mediterranean architecture enhances the ambiance, giving it an unexplained feeling of comfort and familiarity. Poised on 102 pristine acres with breathtaking panoramic ocean views, this world-class resort offers countless ways to spend each day.

Who doesn’t like a seamless check-in with champagne in hand? After admiring the ocean view suite, I dashed off to take the ocean trail hike that was offered. I was the only one that showed up at 4:00 PM. Yay for me, I love private tours! Debbie, one of the fitness instructors, showed me the lay of the land. It was an excellent way to stretch my legs after the car ride and learn more about the property. Our journey led us down many paths including a secluded cove where we did stretches.

Saturday morning I arrived early to the fitness center to ensure a good spot in the movement room. Rumor has it that the 9:00AM ocean-view hatha yoga class fills up quick and on this particular day it did. The class was instructed by Issa who is also a massage therapist at the spa. Issa quietly moved around the room making slight pose adjustments. I’m not a yogi but have been doing yoga on-and-off since the mid 90′s and I love any opportunity to learn more… and did. Also, she reminded us the importance of breathing and when to breath during the moves. “Meditation is not something we do, it’s who we are” Issa explained and I couldn’t agree more.

Finally the time had come to visit the spa! A resort spa experience is not meant to be rushed. This is a time to surrender, time to rejuvenate. I know we all have our preferences, but I don’t understand why someone would visit a spa of this grandeur and request a regular massage… or is it just me? Take a chance, try something new, live a little! I enjoyed a wonderful conversation with Assistant Spa Director, Helen Giang, and asked which treatment she would suggest. Helen recommend the 90 minute “Passage” massage. Done.

Enjoying the view before my appointment!

After taking a cold plunge, whirlpool, spa lunch and soaking up the endless ocean view, it was time for the massage experience. Amber, massage therapist, escorts me to the 2nd floor. There is an elevator available but we took the stairs. All of the treatment rooms are on the 2nd level. Once in the room, Amber explains that the treatment is a slow, rhythmic massage of sensuous, aromatic botanicals. Face down with my head in the cradle, she cups her hands in front of my face with an essential oil blend of geranium, lavender, marjoram, and chamomile. She starts with my back and proceeds to use a medium pressure on my entire body. When I rolled over to be face-up, Amber placed a warm marine pillow on my abdomen and one underneath in the lower back area. A warm buckwheat pillow was placed under my neck and a small pillow was gently placed over my eyes. The Passage massage techniques induce calmness and relaxation and that’s exactly how I felt afterward. This was definitely a stay-cation that will not be forgotten!
